Mandal Commission Implementation Day should be celebrated as Mandal Day for OBCs - Potala Prasad Naidu, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, All India OBC President

New Delhi, August 7, 2024

Today is a turning point in Indian history. On this day in 1990, the Central Government approved the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations. OBC National President Jyotirao Phule, Potala Prasad Naidu described this moment as a new era for social justice. He emphasized that equal respect and status for backward classes are essential democratic principles. This is an event that breathes life into a new era. It has been described as the third biggest event in the history of the country after the two biggest events of August 15, 1947 and January 26, 1950.

On December 13, 1946, Jawaharlal Nehru announced the 'Objective Resolutions' in the Constituent Assembly. It said that OBCs would be provided adequate protection. The same thing is contained in the Preamble of the Constitution. The Constituent Assembly constituted the Backward Classes Commission through Article 340, to identify the backward classes and take steps for their upliftment. Empowering Dalits is important for social transformation. According to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the second National Commission for Backward Classes was set up in 1978 under the leadership of late Shri Bindeshwar Prasad Mandal, MP and 64th Chief Minister of Bihar.

When his health deteriorated, he collected proposals from people across India and submitted the final commission report on December 31, 1980. The report presented in Parliament recommended 27% reservation for OBCs in education and employment. So we are declaring this day as Mandal Day. Since then, various political parties have been making announcements. Also present at the press conference were Ponnala Lakshmaiah (former PCC committee president)
